The Selva Negra Mountain Resort is a coffee hacienda and private forest reserve in the mountains about 4km from the town of Matagalpa, the entrance is marked by a Sandanista destroyed Samoza era tank, setting the scene for a unique place in Nicaragua.

The resort is located on a coffee farm and next to beautiful hills covered with virgin cloud forest.
Activities  include hiking and horseback riding through the forest. Bird watching is excellent!
Howler monkeys if not seen can almost always be heard!
The owners of Selva Negra are descendants of German settlers that came to the area in the 19th century. You can still see the Germanic influence in the interior of the rooms and the Selva Negra restaurant.
In the restaurant there are also many old photos, newspaper articles, tools, and other items displayed that illustrate the history of the settlement.
The chalets are  beautiful and spacious, filled with history and built in the old German style.
Though some visitors have complained of 'musty' smells in the rooms it should be remembered that the reserve is in a cloud forest!
Another option near to Matagalpa- about 30km- with better accommodation is the private nature reserve and eco-lodge  Finca Esperanza Verde
In 2007 it was the winner of Virgin Holidays responsible tourism award.

In the Central Highlands- 900 meters above sea level- Matagalpa is a  cool, green and pleasant respite from the heat of the cities and beaches.

With lush forests, beautiful green mountain landscapes this is the heart of Nicaraguan coffee country and home to the  nearby coffee plantation of Selva Negra

There are plenty of hiking trails in the forest as well as the chance to see howler monkeys, coatis, armadillos and more than 200 species of birds.

The flora and fauna bathe you in green.

Experience real eco-tourism without the tour buses and tour operators that have changed many parts of Costa Rica into a tourist trap.
