Cathedral in León at night.

Cathedral in León at night.

North West Nicaragua

The largest cathedral in Central America and home to the tomb of Nicaragua's most famous poet, Ruben Dario.
The tomb is in the center of the cathedral with a lion statue next to it.
Work commenced on Catedral de León under the then Bishop Benito de Baltodano in 1747, it was completed in 1860.
There are cellars under the church, originally linked to other churches so that treasures could be hidden from marauding pirates. They're mostly blocked off now but it is still possible to visit a few of them.
However the best view- after the interior and facade of course- is from the rooftops.
You can get a guide in the church- usually about US$2- but usually in Spanish.
