Cerro Negro Nicaragua

Cerro Negro Nicaragua

Cerro Negro is located 25km NE of Leon.

The barren steep black slopes of Cerro Negro volcano are covered with the evidence of the recent -1999- eruption leaving a residue of volcanic ash and rocks.
Though only 400 meters high, the ascent is steep and takes about 1 hour to climb. The panoramic views are worth the effort though.
Experienced snowboarders or skiers can board their way back down!

TIPS:

Bring plenty of water and sunscreen but most importantly plan this trip as early on the day as possible.
Begin the ascent at around dawn to climb the volcano when it is still warming up, but the heat is lower than later in the day.
Wear good shoes, the ground is often full of sharp edges.
